About

Tansem Psychology Inc.

Tansem Psychology Inc. is a team of professional, experienced Registered Psychologists who remain focused on the positive growth, well-being, and mental health of individuals, families and groups. We strive to bring a collaborative, developmental, multicultural, and wellness perspective to our practice. We work with many types of individuals, including those experiencing distress and difficulties associated with life events and transitions, decision-making, work/career/education, family and social relationships, and mental health and physical health concerns. In addition to counseling, we engage in prevention, psycho-education, and advocacy.

Using a person-centered model, our therapists view individuals as agents of their own change and regard an individual’s pre-existing strengths and resourcefulness and the therapeutic relationship as central mechanisms of change. Our therapists are trained in a variety of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Solution-Focused Therapy.

Therapies

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a goal-oriented approach to therapy with a goal of changing a person’s patterns of thinking or behaviour that are the cause of people’s difficulties. This change in thinking and behaviour changes how people feel. It is used to treat a wide-range of issues.

CBT works by changing a client’s attitude and their behaviour by focusing on thoughts and beliefs that they hold and how these are related to the way they then deal with emotional problems. This type of therapy emphasizes the important of the meaning we personally place on things and how our thinking patterns (helpful or unhelpful) develop in childhood.

CBT is used to treat many concerns including anxiety, OCD, depression, interpersonal difficulties, low self-esteem, panic disorder, phobias, insomnia or sleep disturbances.

What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)Therapy?

EMDR is a therapy that was originally developed to assist in the treatment of trauma and PTSD and it continues to be an excellent form of therapy for these issues. EMDR can also be used to treat phobias, anxiety and depression.

Trauma that has not been processed correctly continues to cause distress in the body and in the brain. This distress can be debilitating and there are many symptoms that people can experience. EMDR is a treatment that integrates the traumatic memories into a person’s more adaptive or positive memories. These new links are thought to result in new learnings, elimination of emotional distress, and new insights. EMDR can be used as a stand-alone treatment or as one aspect of a treatment plan.

What Is Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-focused therapy, also called solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), is a type of therapy that places far more importance on discussing solutions than problems. Of course, you must discuss the problem to find a solution, but beyond understanding what the problem is and deciding how to address it, solution-focused therapy will not dwell on every detail of the problem you are experiencing.
Solution-focused brief therapy doesn’t require a deep dive into your childhood and the ways in which your past has influenced your present. Instead, it will root your sessions firmly in the present while working toward a future in which your current problems have less of an impact on your life.
Solution-focused brief therapy is committed to finding realistic, workable solutions for clients as quickly as possible. It has been successfully applied in individual, couples, and family therapy. The problems it can address are wide-ranging, from the normal stressors of life to high-impact life events.
